National Register of Historic Places
Sands Estates – A historic preservation consultant recently completed an extensive house by house survey and analysis of the area from Belmont to Orangewood avenues, 55th to 59th avenues. Of the 180 homes, 144 were determined to most likely meet the eligibility requirements to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places as a “contributing“ property - meaning the homes meet the eligibility requirements of ranch style architecture. A nomination will soon be submitted to the State Historic Preservation Office for processing. The State Historic Site Selection Committee will consider the nomination and make the recommendation to the State Historic Preservation Officer, who will send it on to the Keeper of the National Register. The Keeper generally takes 45 days to review and list or reject the nomination on the National Register. The Federal Keeper of the Register gives the final approval.

Neighborhood Improvement Grants East Catlin Court – Construction on Phase I, which was made possible by both City of Glendale Neighborhood and Federal grants, will begin soon. The street landscaping project includes work on Gardenia Avenue from 56th to 57th avenues. The project includes trees, sidewalk modifications, installation of handicap ramps, carriage street lighting and driveway aprons. Floralcroft – Construction is under way in the historic Floralcroft neighborhood, located west of 59th Avenue, north of Myrtle and along the south side of State Avenue. The neighborhood will benefit from improvements funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The grant of $240,000 will be used to install new pedestrian lighting and various sidewalk improvements. This one-time allocation is made possible by stimulus dollars.

Northern Avenue Storm Drain Project Construction is continuing on a project to install storm drains along Northern Avenue from 47th to 63rd avenues. Traffic is restricted (east and west) usually to one lane in each direction. Some lateral lines are being installed which are designed to bring water from the side of the street into the storm drain pipe. To reduce the impact on traffic at 59th and Northern avenues, the contractor tunneled and installed the storm drain pipe under the intersection. Crews recently completed the tunneling and will begin work on the east side of 59th Avenue in late February. The entire project is expected to take about 13 months. Ocotillo District Capital Improvement Projects The following projects were completed and paid for with Ocotillo District funds.
- Signage is important and beneficial. With the completion of Grand Avenue and the changes in traffic patterns that resulted, additional signs were installed in four locations to guide visitors to the downtown.
- The Glendale Community Center is a vital community gathering place in the Ocotillo District. New furniture was purchased for the lobby as well as tables and chairs for the activity rooms. This has improved the aesthetics as well as the usefulness of the facility. The Community Center is available for group rental and the new furniture will go a long way in making the facility more appealing and desirable. Funds raised through rentals will be used for programming.
- Bingo is a favorite activity of those attending the Glendale Community Center. A new Bingo Machine was recently installed which will be used for regular daily activities as well as special events.
- There were several locations in the Heart of Glendale and the Orchard Glen neighborhoods that received a clean-up of the Rights of Ways. Applications of Post and Pre-emergent solutions improved the appearance of these areas.
