The goal of the Community Volunteer Program is to improve the quality of life for Glendale residents and volunteers through valuable public service projects.
The Glendale City Council created this fantastic program as a one-year pilot project in 1998. The reason for starting such a program was simple—involving Glendale residents and community groups in volunteer service projects develops a healthier, more livable city!
The program is now an ongoing city service in the Neighborhood Partnership Office, which gives volunteers a sense of pride by contributing to improvements in the community. In the ten years since the program was created, Glendale has benefited greatly from these projects. Since 1998, more than 25,000 volunteers have contributed nearly 95,000 volunteer hours, which are valued at more than $1.7 million.
Community volunteer projects are designed for large groups of volunteers. The average size of a group is about 25. So gather your friends, relatives or co-workers and become involved in the community. Individual volunteers are welcome to contact the office about volunteer opportunities and join a group of volunteers to help out in the community.
We do not assist those who must complete court-ordered community service. Contact the Parks & Recreation department at 623-930-2691 for assistance with court-ordered community service.

Whether you’re an individual or a member of a group, the first step in getting involved with city volunteer projects is to register with Glendale’s Community Volunteer Program. In order to register, fill out a Registration Form and a Volunteer Pledge Form and mail it to:

Once you or your group registers with the city, you will be entered into a database and begin receiving a quarterly Volunteer E-Newsletter of upcoming volunteer projects.
About the Program
What happens at the site: Glendale’s community volunteer coordinator attends all volunteer projects (unless otherwise specified). The necessary tools and supplies will be provided at the site, a brief overview of the project will be conducted, instructions given on the work to be performed, safety precautions covered and the project supervised. Any on-site questions or concerns should be directed to the coordinator.
All volunteers need to sign-in on a designated log sheet and turn in their “Volunteer Pledge” form (a small claims liability waiver). Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian sign the waiver form and be accompanied by an adult, one adult per ten youth.
Program benefits
Glendale's Community Volunteer Program is valuable to the entire city for many reasons. For instance, the program provides volunteer opportunities for interested citizens, community groups and other organizations; engages residents and others to take responsibility for enhancing the quality of life in their city; assists residents (who qualify) and local non-profit agencies with certain types of public improvement projects; offers free advice and tools to neighborhoods.
When schools, neighborhoods and dedicated individuals work together, it benefits the entire community. Glendale’s goal is to involve volunteer groups that represent a variety of community organizations, from civic and youth groups to businesses and the faith based community.

Assisting citizens and neighborhoods
Glendale residents that have special needs can request one-time assistance through the city’s Community Volunteer Program. The program focuses on helping individuals who have a sincere and bona fide need for service. This includes individuals who are unable to perform the work themselves.
If you answer “yes” to two or more of the following questions, you may qualify for free volunteer services through this program:
Are you a Glendale resident?
Are you currently experiencing financial challenges?
Are family members or neighbors unable to assist you?
Do you have physical limitations that affect your ability to do the work yourself?
Projects typically not recommended for service include:
Those that do not benefit the overall community or show a public benefit
Projects that do not demonstrate sufficient or sincere need
Those who have received assistance from the program in the past

6th Annual Serve Day in Glendale a Success Thanks to Volunteers
Serve Day is a faith-based, community-oriented event organized by various local churches, who encourage their members to participate. The 6th annual Serve Day was held on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 and was a huge success. More than 500 volunteers from Community Church of Joy, Christ’s Church of the Valley, Faith Bible Church, and The Vineyard participated. The volunteers completed more than 2,950 volunteer hours for a total of $58,750 of volunteer time. The volunteers worked on 20 different projects in Glendale including:
Blue Sky Mobile Home Park (painted 4 homes, painted house numbers on the curbs, cleaned-up front yards)
Granada Estates Neighborhood (cleaned up front yards and an empty lot)
Pioneer Elementary School (painted the playground equipment.)
Heart of Glendale Neighborhoods (painted 4 homes, landscaped front yards, painted house numbers on the curbs, cleaned up the local parks.)
Glendale Residents Benefit From Home Improvement Program From Habitat And M&I Bank
Glendale residents in the Heart of Glendale neighborhood benefited from minor home repairs, exterior house painting, yard clean-up and landscaping thanks to the launch of a new program called “A Brush with Kindness.” Read more
Upcoming Events
Serve-A-Thon
Date: Saturday, April 28, 2012 Time: 8 a.m.
Join HandsOn Greater Phoenix and the City of Glendale Neighborhood Partnership Office for the 19th Annual Serve-A Thon on Saturday, April 28th! This event will bring together 1,500 corporate, civic, and individual volunteers for a day of hands-on community service. This year, volunteers will paint three homes in the LaFontana neighborhood in Glendale.
Eagle Scout Project
Date: Saturday, May 12, 2012 Time: 8 a.m.
Volunteers from a local Boy Scout Troop will participate in a neighborhood beautification project in the Chaparral West neighborhood. Volunteers will paint house numbers on the curbs, clean up front yards, pick up trash at the local park, and much more.
Neighborhood Tool Shed
Want to improve your neighborhood but are short on equipment or cash? The Community Volunteer Program can help.
Registered neighborhood and volunteer groups can check out tools for a particular project they’re coordinating on their own. Expert advice and project consulting may be available, as well.
The group will be responsible for returning all tools in the condition they were checked out. Tools are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. In addition, a limited amount of funding is available to cover items such as dumpsters, equipment rental or trash removal for projects that qualify.
