Construction to Begin for Northern Avenue Storm Drain Project

Northern Avenue Storm Drain Construction Information UPDATE

Since your business, residence, or organization is located near this project, we’d like to provide some tentative construction information.  We will do our best to provide the most current information; however, please remember that construction schedules sometimes need to be adjusted due to weather, utility coordination, or various other factors.  Should you have questions, comments or concerns regarding this project, please don’t hesitate to contact our project hotline at 1.877.203.0042.  We thank you for your continued patience during this project!

  • 59th Avenue:  Crews will work on Tuesday (Sep 7), earlier in the day, to complete work north of Northern Avenue on the west side of 59th Avenue on one remaining catch basin in that area.  Crews will then move to the east side of 59th Avenue, later in the day, to complete work on a lateral and catch basin in that area.  This work on the east side is estimated to take approximately 4-6 days to complete.
  • 58th Avenue:   Crews are tentatively scheduled to work on the north side of Northern Avenue at 58th Avenue, on the SRP irrigation line in that area.  This work is tentatively scheduled to take place Wednesday through Friday (Sep 8-10) of this week; and next Wednesday through Friday (Sep 15-17) as well, to switch traffic to the south side of Northern Avenue while crews work in the westbound traffic lanes.
  • 53rd Avenue:  Crews are tentatively scheduled to begin work on Tuesday (Sep 7), on the northwest corner of 53rd Avenue on a lateral on the north side of Northern Avenue.  This work should take approximately one week to complete, and during this same time, crews will also work on the northeast corner of 53rd Avenue to install a catch basin in that area.
  • 51st Avenue:   Crews are scheduled to begin work on Tuesday (Sep 7), on a catch basin on the north side of Northern Avenue, just west of 51st Avenue (near Connolly’s).  This work should take approximately one week to complete.   Crews will also work on the northeast corner of 51st Avenue and Northern Avenue to remove the existing SRP irrigation structure in that area.  That work should also be completed by the end of the week.
  • Between 49th Avenue and 51st Avenue:  Crews will begin work this week on two catch basins in this area, one near Siam Restaurant and one just west of 49th Avenue.  This work should take approximately one week to complete.
  • Crews will be working in various places in Northern Avenue during the next couple of weeks to raise manholes and utilities to be flush with the road surface.
  • What are “laterals” and “catch basins”?   The main storm drain pipe is the large diameter pipe being installed that runs east-west in Northern Avenue to bring storm water to its ultimate destination (or “outfall”) in the retention area in the park on the southwest corner of 63rd Avenue and Northern Avenue.  “Laterals” are the pipes that run north-south from catch basins, or holes in the curb and gutter, to the main storm drain pipe.  This way storm water can flow down Northern Avenue along the curb/gutter until it reaches a catch basin…..it flows into the catch basin, then through the lateral into the main storm drain pipe to flow to the retention basin.
  •  What is “potholing”?   Prior to the main storm drain pipe installation, potholing is being conducted in various pre-determined locations along the project site.  Potholing consists of digging small holes in the ground to provide information to the project team in the way of location and depth of underground utilities in an attempt to minimize utility conflicts during the installation of the 72” storm drain pipe.

For your safety and the safety of the workers, please drive with caution through the construction activity.  Please feel free to contact our hotline at 1.877.203.0042 with any questions, comments or concerns regarding the project, and once again, thank you for your patience as we work on this very important project for the City of Glendale’s storm water system.
