MYAC Public Service Announcement About the Negative Consequences of "Beer Runs"
The 2011 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission partnered with the Glendale Police Department and Glendale Channel 11 to create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) about the negative consequences of “beer runs.”
The Glendale Police Department received funds through the Smart Policing Initiatives Grant (SPI). Through the SPI grant, law enforcement agencies partner with research institutions to build evidence-based, data driven law enforcement tactics and strategies that are effective efficient, and economical.
Along with their research partner, Arizona State University, the Glendale Police Department determined that “beer runs” or shoplifting beer from convenience stores was a chronic problem among Arizona cities. Glendale Police and ASU determined that youth were among the common offenders and they wanted help getting the word out about the negative consequences that can occur from these beer runs.
The Glendale Police Department approached MYAC as Glendale’s voice for the youth in the community. They explained the situation to the MYAC members and the commission decided they would like to create a PSA to help get the word out.
MYAC, along with Glendale Channel 11 and the Glendale Police Department filmed the PSA and it is now being shown in Glendale schools and on Glendale Channel 11. Click here to watch the Beer Run PSA.
