Councilmember Alvarez was elected in November 2010 to represent the Ocotillo District beginning January 2011. She currently serves on Glendale’s Sustainability Committee and is a past member of the Glendale Development Advisory Board and the Community Development Advisory Committee.
Alvarez is a native and lifelong resident of Glendale, and graduate of Glendale High School. She began her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse; then went on to work at the City of Glendale – first as an Occupancy Aide at the Housing Authority and later as Director of the Community Action Program.
Councilmember Alvarez is Co-founder of the Glendale Youth Center; established the “Show Them a Better Way” youth program in 1992; and was recognized by Hillary Clinton in 1996 with a special invitation to the White House for her involvement with community youth programs. She was also a member of the Glendale Community Council, Arizona Community Action Association and the Glendale Youth Center Board
Councilmember Alvarez has been married to her husband, Fernando for 45 years, is the proud parent of two sons, Fernando Jr. and Jeff and has four grandchildren, Gabriella, Noah, Ariel and Jason.
